Marcus Rashford injury update: Latest news, and how long Man United star could be out

Marcus Rashford handed Manchester United an injury scare during the closing stages of a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

Rashford continued his superb form this season by laying on a second-half goal for Anthony Martial at Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s side strengthened their grip on a top-four finish in the Premier League.

However, the England international made way with nine minutes remaining to spark concern over his participation in some huge games coming up at the business end of the 2022/23 season.

Here’s all we know about Rashford’s injury so far.

What is Marcus Rashford’s injury?

The circumstances of Rashford’s injury were pretty innocuous. He attempted to control a ball delivered over the top of the Everton defence but pulled up and immediately signaled to come off.

The problem looked to be a groin injury, though specific details have yet to be provided.

Rashford was able to walk around the Old Trafford pitch under his own power before reaching the players’ tunnel.

He was in conversation with a member of United’s medical staff before giving his shirt to a young fan.

What did Erik ten Hag say about Marcus Rashford’s injury?

Immediately following the match, Ten Hag did not give any clear information over the nature of Rashford’s injury or the prognosis, although he did not sound optimistic.

“We have to wait. He doesn’t look well. Once again, that is due to the schedule,” he told BT Sport.

“It can’t be that you play three games in six days. We have to protect our players.

“Everyone wants their best players on the pitch, everyone wants to see great entertaining football like today. [For that] you need your best players.”

United were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle six days before, then rebounded with a 1-0 win over Brentford at Old Trafford. Their victory over Everton was their third match in six days.

“It’s too much,” Ten Hag added to the BBC, predicting that United will receive a “diagnosis” on the injury on Sunday or Monday.

“Especially when you play last Sunday night and then the first game on the Saturday. In the week, you have to make the game against Brentford, the game instead of the Carabao Cup. So you get punished for reaching the final, so it is not right.

“It is like this when you have to play so many games in short notice, especially when the schedule is this tight. Players can’t recover and you run the risk that players can get injured. You have to be aware of that.”

What Man United games will Marcus Rashford miss?

Premier League games have been the sole focus since the March international break, which Rashford sat out after picking up a knock during United’s FA Cup quarterfinal against Fulham.

On Sunday, April 23, Ten Hag’s side face Brighton at Wembley in the FA Cup semis. Prior to that, they must negotiate a two-legged Europa League quarterfinal against Sevilla either side of a trip to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

How many goals has Marcus Rashford scored this season?

Rashford is enjoying the best season of his career and hit a particularly rich vein of form immediately after the World Cup, where he scored three goals during England’s run to the quarterfinals in Qatar.

Overall, he has 27 in all competitions, including 15 in 28 Premier League appearances. The most recent of those was the only goal in United’s April 5 midweek win over Brentford.

The goalscoring burden placed upon Rashford is considerable. Next on United’s scoring charts across all competitions in 2022/23 is Bruno Fernandes with 10. Martial and Antony have seven apiece.
